How the lessons work

Book your test first
Book your practical test with an approved testing agent such as AA or VTNZ, then tell us the date and time.

Confirm car hire
We confirm availability and go through the hire terms with you.

Warm-up before the test
You drive for a short warm-up before your test slot, so you arrive settled instead of cold.

Sit your test
You sit the test in a car you already know, with the paperwork the testing agent needs.

How much does it cost to hire a car for a driving test in Auckland?
Drive Smart charges $60 an hour for test car hire. That covers the vehicle for your test slot and a warm-up drive beforehand. Terms and conditions apply.
What car will I sit my test in?
An automatic hybrid fitted with dual controls. It is the same car used for lessons, so you are not adapting to an unfamiliar vehicle on the day.
Can I hire the car without taking lessons with you?
Get in touch and we can discuss it. We would rather you had driven the car at least once first. Sitting a test in a vehicle you have never driven rarely goes well.
Do I still need to book the test myself?
Yes. You book the practical test yourself through an approved testing agent such as AA (aa.co.nz) or VTNZ (vtnz.co.nz). We provide the car, not the booking.
