Car Hire for Your Driving Test
Car hire for a driving test gives you a vehicle that meets the testing agency's requirements when you do not have one of your own. Drive Smart hires out the same dual-control automatic hybrid used in lessons from $60 an hour, so the car is already familiar on test day. A supervisor to accompany you to the test, or a support person to accompany you during it, can be arranged for an additional fee.

How the lessons work

Book your test first
Book your practical test with VTNZ, either at vtnz.co.nz or online through NZTA at nzta.govt.nz, then tell us the date and time. You can sit it at any VTNZ centre, so take the first slot that suits you rather than the nearest one.

Confirm car hire
We confirm availability and go through the hire terms with you, including anything charged on top of the hourly rate, such as a support person or supervisor for the test.

Warm-up before the test
You drive for a short warm-up before your test slot, so you arrive settled instead of cold.

Sit your test
You sit the test in a car you already know, with the paperwork the testing agent needs.

Common questions
How much does it cost to hire a car for a driving test in Auckland?
Drive Smart charges from $60 an hour for test car hire. That covers the vehicle for your test slot and a warm-up drive beforehand. Additional charges apply if you need a support person and/or a supervisor for the test. Terms and conditions apply.
What car will I sit my test in?
An automatic hybrid fitted with dual controls. It is the same car used for lessons, so you are not adapting to an unfamiliar vehicle on the day.
Can I hire the car without taking lessons with you?
Get in touch and we can discuss it. We would rather you had driven the car at least once first. Sitting a test in a vehicle you have never driven rarely goes well.
Do I still need to book the test myself?
Yes. You book the practical test yourself through an approved testing agent, VTNZ (vtnz.co.nz), or book it online through NZTA at nzta.govt.nz/do-it-online/driver-licensing. We provide the car, not the booking.
What is the difference between a supervisor and a support person?
A supervisor accompanies you to your driving test location, for an additional fee. A support person can accompany you during your driving test, if required, also for an additional fee. You can book either, both or neither, on top of the hourly hire rate.
Can someone from Drive Smart come with me as a support person or supervisor?
Yes. If you need a support person and/or a supervisor for your practical test, we can arrange it at an additional cost on top of the hourly hire rate. Tell us when you book so we can confirm availability and the total price before test day.
