Full licence lessons prepare restricted drivers for the practical full licence test. The full test is shorter than the restricted one but marked harder on hazard detection, so lessons concentrate on how early you read a hazard and whether your speed suits the conditions.

Habit review
Restricted drivers arrive with habits built over months of driving alone. The first lesson works out which of those habits the full test marks you down for.

Hazard and speed work
The full test is mostly a hazard-detection test. Lessons drill how far ahead you scan and how early you commit to a decision.

Open-road practice
Higher-speed and rural driving around Drury, Karaka and Franklin, where there are real open roads to practise on.

A scored simulation with written feedback so you know exactly what to change before test day.
Common questions
How long must I hold my restricted licence before the full licence test?
There is a minimum period on your restricted licence, and completing an approved advanced driving course can shorten it. The exact periods depend on your age and are set by NZTA, so check nzta.govt.nz for the current rules before you book.
Is the full licence test harder than the restricted test?
It is shorter but marked differently. The testing officer is watching whether you spot a hazard and act on it early, so hazard detection counts for more than the manoeuvres that dominate the restricted test.
I have been driving on my restricted for years. Do I still need lessons?
Most experienced restricted drivers still get something out of one assessment lesson. Years of driving alone build efficient habits, and a testing officer may mark those same habits as not enough observation or the wrong speed for the conditions.
How long does the full licence test take and what happens in it?
Allow about 30 minutes at the test centre. That covers the vehicle checks first, roughly 20 minutes of driving, and the testing officer's feedback afterwards. There is no separate stage 1 as there is in the restricted test: you drive one continuous route in normal traffic.
What does the testing officer actually assess on the full licence test?
Searching and observation, gap selection, following distance, speed choice for the conditions, and above all hazard detection. You are asked to identify hazards as you drive and the officer marks how early you spot them and how you adjust for them, so commentary driving is worth practising before the day.
What will fail me straight away on the full licence test?
The testing officer ends the test if you drive dangerously, recklessly or inconsiderately, exceed the speed limit, break a give way rule, ignore a stop sign or a traffic signal, or are involved in a crash you are responsible for. Less serious mistakes are recorded as critical errors, such as not looking before a manoeuvre, not signalling, stalling, mounting the kerb, or driving too fast or too slowly for the conditions.
What do I need to bring, and what does the car have to have?
Bring photo identification, normally your restricted licence. The vehicle needs a current warrant of fitness, a current registration label and a road user charges licence if it is diesel or electric. Cars on trade plates or running a space-saver tyre cannot be used. Our hire car meets all of that, and you can hire it for the test from $60 an hour.
What happens if I fail the full licence test?
You get the testing officer's marked sheet and feedback on the day, and one free resit is included. We work through the sheet with you and target the lessons at what it listed, rather than starting over. Check nzta.govt.nz for the current fees, resit terms and booking rules before you rebook.
