Drive Smart Driving School

Driving Lessons for Nervous Drivers

Drive Smart teaches a lot of anxious learners, including adults who have put off driving for years. Lessons start on quiet residential streets in Papakura and move at whatever pace suits you, in a dual-control automatic so the instructor can step in. A standard lesson is $75.

What you'll be able to do

  • Get comfortable with the car itself before going anywhere busy
  • Build up to main roads at a pace you set, not one imposed on you
  • Learn what to do when something goes wrong, which is usually the real fear
  • Drive without the instructor talking constantly, once you want the quiet

How the lessons work

  1. 1

Tell us what you're worried about

Before the first lesson we talk about what specifically bothers you. Roundabouts, motorways, other drivers getting impatient, or just the whole thing. It's a different lesson depending on the answer.

  2. 2

    Quiet streets first

The first lesson stays on residential streets where almost nothing is moving. Nobody's putting you on Great South Road on day one.

  3. 3

One new thing at a time

Each lesson adds a single harder element rather than several. That's slower on paper and faster in practice, because you're not spending the next lesson recovering from a bad one.

  4. 4

Build to the test when you want to

Plenty of anxious learners go on to sit and pass their restricted or full test. Some just want to drive to work without dreading it. Both are a fine place to stop.

Common questions

I'm an adult who never learned to drive. Is that a problem?

Not at all. A good share of our students are adults who put it off, sometimes for decades. You will not be the first and nobody is going to make you feel silly about it.

I failed my test and lost my nerve. Can you help?

Yes, and it is common. We usually start with an assessment lesson to work out what actually went wrong, because the thing people think they failed on often is not the thing the testing officer marked.

Will you shout at me or grab the wheel?

No. The car has dual controls so the instructor can brake if there is a genuine safety issue, which almost never happens. Being shouted at teaches nobody to drive.

Can I have a shorter first lesson?

Get in touch and ask. Lessons run an hour as standard, but if that feels like too much for a first go, say so when you book and we can talk about it.

★★★★★
Shaila was an excellent instructor, very patient and helpful. She even brought supplemental material for certain situations when driving, which was very helpful. Would highly recommend for anxious drivers.
