Learner to Restricted Licence Lessons
Restricted licence lessons take you from a learner licence to passing the practical restricted test. Drive Smart works on the observation and gap selection that testing officers mark hardest, then runs a full mock test so you find out whether you are ready before you pay for the real one.

- Hold correct lane position and following distance without prompting

- Park accurately, including parallel and reverse parking
- Scan for and respond to hazards before the instructor points them out
How the lessons work
- 1
Assessment lesson
Your first lesson works out what you can already do. You drive, and we note the habits that would cost you the test. Usually that is observation and following distance rather than car control.
- 2
Targeted skill lessons
Each lesson works on the weakest area from the last one, on roads that suit it. Roundabout judgement gets practised in Manurewa; motorway merging gets practised at Takanini.
- 3
Test route practice
Lessons move onto the roads around your test centre so nothing on test day is unfamiliar.
- 4
Mock test
A full test simulation, marked the way a testing officer marks it, with a written report of every fault and what to do about it.
- 5
Book with confidence
We tell you when you are ready. If you are not, we say so, because booking early just costs you the test fee twice.
Common questions
How long do I need to hold my learner licence before the restricted test?
You must hold your learner licence for at least 6 months before sitting the restricted test. Check nzta.govt.nz for the current rules and any exceptions that apply to you.
How many lessons do I need to pass my restricted test?
It varies. Learners who get regular supervised practice between lessons often need three to five. Learners who only drive during lessons usually need more. We tell you where you stand after the first lesson instead of selling a fixed package up front.
Can I use your car for my restricted test?
Yes. Car hire for your test is $60 an hour, in the same dual-control automatic hybrid you learned in, so nothing about the car is new on test day. Terms apply.
What is the most common reason learners fail the restricted test?
In our lessons it is nearly always observation: not checking mirrors and blind spots early enough, and not looking far enough ahead at intersections. Most learners who come to us after a failed test were marked on that rather than on car control.
“Mrs Shaila's guidance was the biggest support for me in passing my restricted licence test. I just had one session with her, and in that one session, all her teachings, tips and detailed feedback immensely helped me focus on the important things that the driving test officers look for. Before her assessing, I had failed at my first attempt of the test and she told me the exact reasons for it after thoroughly watching me drive. She told me where I was going wrong and made me practice those things in that one session. I am really grateful for having Mrs Shaila assess my driving.”
