- Complete left and right turns with full observation and correct signalling

How the lessons work

Assessment lesson
Your first lesson works out what you can already do. You drive, and we note the habits that would cost you the test. Usually that is observation and following distance rather than car control.

Targeted skill lessons
Each lesson works on the weakest area from the last one, on roads that suit it. Roundabout judgement and the railway crossing get practised at Takanini, while keep-clear areas get practised in Manurewa.

Practice near the centre you booked
Later lessons move onto the roads around the VTNZ centre you booked, wherever that is. We do not know the official route and nobody outside the testing agency does, but driving that area beforehand means the roads themselves are not a surprise.

Mock test
A full test simulation, marked the way a testing officer marks it, with a written report of every fault and what to do about it.

Book with confidence
We tell you when you are ready. If you are not, we say so, because booking early just costs you the test fee twice. The booking is yours to make, through VTNZ or online with NZTA, at whichever centre has a slot that suits you.
Common questions
How long do I need to hold my learner licence before the restricted test?
You must hold your learner licence for at least 6 months before sitting the restricted test. Check nzta.govt.nz for the current rules and any exceptions that apply to you.
How many lessons do I need to pass my restricted test?
It varies. Learners who get regular supervised practice between lessons often need three to five. Learners who only drive during lessons usually need more. We tell you where you stand after the first lesson instead of selling a fixed package up front.
Can I use your car for my restricted test?
Yes. Car hire for your test is from $60 an hour, in the same dual-control automatic hybrid you learned in, so nothing about the car is new on test day. A support person or supervisor for the test costs extra. Terms apply.
What is the most common reason learners fail the restricted test?
Observation is one of the most common areas learners need to improve. It includes checking mirrors and blind spots early and consistently, scanning well ahead, and identifying potential hazards at intersections. Learners also need to demonstrate safe gap selection and the ability to avoid driving either too slowly or too fast for the conditions.
Where do I book the restricted test, and do you book it for me?
You book it yourself, through VTNZ at vtnz.co.nz or online with NZTA at nzta.govt.nz/do-it-online/driver-licensing. You can sit it at any VTNZ centre, so take the first slot that suits you rather than the one nearest home. We tell you when you are ready to book, and you can hire our car for the test from $60 an hour.
